TASK 3
Traditional Dance ‘Bajau’

'Igal - Igal' dance and 'dalling - dalling' a traditional Bajau dance the East Coast and is very popular in the Semporna district. Word 'dalling - dalling' is plural in the Bajau language, which means whole body movement in a particular rhythm. In discussing the ‘Igal – Igal’ dance is the dance of the Bajau better known as the dance of albatross. Igal word itself is derived from the English word ' eagle '. The graceful dance movements imitate the eagle. Symbolic animal is revered by people of Semporna, besides arguably include movement from the wind.

1.                  Does it work?

             It is mainly danced at social gatherings such as weddings. During the wedding ceremony, usually the dancers will get the money inserted in the hand while dancing as a sign of respect for the host as well as a gift from the audience entertained with their dancing. Sometimes the dancers and singers will compete to show their expertise, who survives sing or dance? The winner is to stop either the dancers or singers will be considered lost by the audience. Traditional dances are trying commercialized by having the traditional competition at the school level as well at the carnival celebrations of the annual festival in Semporna District.

What is it for?

This type of dance meant to entertain the fans, spectators and tourist who are always held on occasion. Apart from that, for this ‘igal-igal’ dance not to be forgotten, this type of dance will be taught to young Bajau's community especially the children aged from 8-10 years old so that they can inherit the ability to dance igal-igal fully. Thus, this type of dance will continuously inherit to next generation.

2.                  ­­­Them in social or cultural context

       Bajau peoples are Malaysian indigenous which stay at Semporna, Sabah. They have unique culture and own beliefs. One of bajau’s cultures is igal-igal dance. They also have beliefs like they cannot cut the nails at the, because in their beliefs its said if they cut their nail as at right it will bring bad luck.
